HISTORY OF NEWARK

Founded in 1802, Newark’s rich history is rooted in business and industry. Rich in resources such as silica, iron, oil and glass brought many to Newark to establish companies such as Holophane, Heisey and Owens Corning Fiberglass. Many early companies continue to offer employment to our residents. Longaberger, makers of American baskets boast the world’s largest basket building in Newark. Newark, Licking County’s seat of government, stands proud with its classic courthouse and preserved Midwestern architecture. The courthouse was built in 1876 and is regarded as one of the finest Second Empire-style courthouses in Ohio.
